CoSHH & Spill Control – What are my Employer Responsibilities?

The HSE website has a whole section dedicated to COSHH in the workplace including case studies, advice sheets, publications and example risk assessments. And risk assessment is where most journeys to planning safe systems of work and peace of mind should begin. Here’s a quick view of the areas you should include when developing your COSHH arrangements for our workplace.

Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards from exposure to substances hazardous to health. This includes chemicals, fumes, dusts, vapours, mists, and biological agents.

Control Measures: Implement appropriate control measures to minimize exposure to hazardous substances. This can include building controls (like ventilation), administrative controls (such as proper work procedures), and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Monitoring and Maintenance: Regularly monitor and maintain control measures to ensure they remain effective. This involves checking equipment like extraction systems and ensuring PPE is in good condition.

Information and Training: Provide employees with information, instruction, and training regarding the hazards associated with the substances they work with and the precautions they need to take.

Safe Use, Handling, and Storage of Dangerous Substances: Establishing protocols for the safe use, handling, and storage of dangerous substances to prevent accidents and health risks.

Health Surveillance: Where necessary, conduct health surveillance to detect early signs of work-related ill health among employees exposed to hazardous substances.

Emergency Procedures: Develop and implement emergency procedures to deal with accidental releases and spillages of hazardous substances.

Health and Safety Policies: Developing and implementing comprehensive health and safety policies that are regularly reviewed and updated.
