A corrosive substances is one that will destroy, dissolve and damage other substances when it comes into contact with them. The deterioration can happen in minutes (such as certain acids when spilled on skin) or slowly over days, months or even years (such as the rusting of iron). At low concentrations, a corrosive substance is called an irritant (and its effect on living tissue is called irritation). At high concentrations, a corrosive substance causes chemical burns and in extreme cases can even cause death. Highlighting containers with corrosive substances is not only mandatory but also an effective way to advise and forewarn of potential dangers.
